The Next Largest Country!

Why do designers often say they want in interfaceless interface?  According to Logic of Transparent Immediacy, an interfaceless interface in one in which there is no recognizable electronic tools, no buttons, windows, scroll bars, or icons. The viewer instead will move through the space interacting more naturally as he or she would do as if they were out in the everyday world.   In a sense, this is more of a virtual reality where three-dimensional graphics help to make digital technology transparent. A transparent interface would erase itself, meaning the viewer is no longer aware of confronting a medium.  Instead the viewer stands in an direct, immediate relationship that connects to the contents of that medium.

Morning talk shows such as Good Morning America and the Today Show each provide links in their websites to social media such as twitter or Facebook. That immediate relationship to their customers on Facebook or whichever social media outlets provides an effective way for Good Morning America or the Today Show to directly connect with their viewers. It also provides another way for their viewers to connect to their show to show their support as fans, and to receive daily updates.

Facebook is still growing today and becoming increasingly popular. Facebook allows viral communication in many different forms which can boost your company’s appearance and relationships with customers.  As you saw in the video, if Myspace was a country, it would be the eighth largest in the world. Who knows how big of a country Facebook will become next year!

  1. I’m a little confused about the two directions this post is taking. I understand transparency when it comes to interfaces, but I hardly think Facebook is one such example. There are buttons, menus, navigation bars, windows, scroll bars, icons, and all kinds of other electronic tools. Same with MySpace… and almost ever other social networking site. So how exactly does that play a role in Talk Shows, etc?

However it definitely is immediate, so that’s a good thing when it comes to talk shows and other things of that nature. It allows for word of mouth and viral communication. Also, Facebook is way more popular than MySpace now. Wonder how big of a “country” it is?

  2. I am also a little confused by this post. I understand the concept of talk shows providing links and buttons to their social networking pages on their main websites, but how exactly does this relate to interfaceless interface? I guess I am a little confused of what that concept actually is because I have never really heard much about it. But it is interesting to think of how big of a community myspace is and how much bigger facebook is.

  3. I personally haven’t heard of the transparency of interfaces. I think it would just be more confusing because I wouldn’t know where to click or how to navigate around the site. I do know that Facebook is always updating their interface and layout of the site though. Whenever they do, everyone goes crazy because it’s something they have to become accustomed to when they were already used to the old one. I do agree that Facebook is taking over the internet.
